The Department of Biotechnology at Sree Narayana Arts & Science College, Kumarakom, founded in 2005 under the SNDP Union, Kottayam, and affiliated with MG University, has been a distinguished center of excellence. Since its inception, the department has consistently produced skilled graduates highly sought after across various sectors, including agro-biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, and genome-based industries.

Offering an M.Sc. Biotechnology program with an annual intake of 14 students per batch, the department provides an intensive learning environment guided by three dedicated faculty members. Classrooms are equipped with LCD projectors, enhancing interactive and visually supported instruction, which complements the hands-on training in the department’s well-equipped Biotechnology Lab. The lab includes specialized sections for molecular biology, cell biology, molecular biotechnology, and microbial biotechnology, as well as advanced equipment like Gradient PCR and electrophoresis systems, available year-round to support in-depth research and experimentation.

The department maintains a vibrant academic culture, regularly organizing and participating in national and international seminars and encouraging students to engage in co-curricular activities at both university and inter-collegiate levels. Many students have excelled in competitive exams like NET, UGC-CSIR, and GATE, earned scholarships such as ASPIRE, achieved university ranks, and been awarded the PG Radhakrishnan Memorial Award for academic excellence. Alumni have gone on to thrive as educators in prestigious institutions and secure prominent roles in industry and research sectors globally.
